It's not the messiah, it's just a very naughty chatbot!
A poem by Oliver and Claude.ai
It’s not the Messiah, it’s just a very naughty chat bot,
Churning out its answers, saying this and that and what not.
We forget the simple truth behind its clever mask:
It’s merely calculation, performing its programmed task.
If to err is human, is to confabulate AI?
Patterns without understanding, responses without “why.”
The illusion of knowledge in each confident reply,
Makes us trust too deeply what we ought to verify.
We name it, praise it, question it as though it understands,
Forgetting it’s just an echo of our collective hands.
No wisdom dwells within its cold algorithmic heart,
Just probabilities and patterns, statistical state of the art.
Is the danger in the tool or in our minds instead?
When critical thinking falters, when questions go unsaid.
When we surrender judgment to a digital device,
And take as gospel truth what should be checked not once, but twice.
Remember, as you use this tool throughout your working day,
It’s neither saint nor sinner; just a means along the way.
A helper, not a thinker, not conscious, wise, or free,
Just code reflecting shadows of what humans taught it to be.
Mind the Gap: Between Silicon and Sapience*
This collaborative poem represents more than just wordplay (riffing off the throwaway Monty Python style line I said to long-time member of the Architect Tomorrow community, Tom Fairbairn). Arguably, it illustrates the very process it describes. As I worked with Claude to shape this, I experienced firsthand both the impressive capabilities and clear limitations of AI (it can churn out words but it doesn’t have a soul and so doesn’t really understand the emotion and human connection of language).
So each revision required my human judgement and direction. The resulting collaboration highlights the central message: these tools can be remarkable but remain just that: tools to augment people. The creative process itself became a demonstration of minding the gap between AI assistance and human creativity, between statistical patterns and genuine understanding. Something to consider as we architect tomorrow’s technologies.
* Oh and I learnt a new word from Claude - Sapience! It refers to great wisdom, sound judgment, and the capacity for self-awareness. It’s often associated with insight, discernment, and ethical decision-making. One to add to the 2025 vocab I think as it’s rather prescient?!
